Groundhog Day is one of America’s quirkiest and least understood holidays, centering around a namesake mammal who “predicts” how much longer the winter temperatures will persist based on the presence of his shadow — or lack thereof.

But who exactly is the groundhog? Here’s everything you need to know about the mascot behind this unusual tradition, including other notable animals featured across the country to help predict spring’s arrival each year.

Depending on where you live, people will offer varied answers for who the most “influential” groundhog is. However, Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil is by far the most well-known groundhog in the U.S. He even has his own Instagram account!

A Brief History of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd each year and has evolved a great deal over the centuries to become what it is today.

This long-running tradition has its roots in Ancient European festival traditions and was originally called Candlemas. It is related to Halloween and May Day in that they are all part of a cycle of pre-Christian Western celebrations marking midway points between solstices and equinoxes each year. According to the Library of Congress (LOC),these holidays actually helped establish the modern calendar and sense of time in the Western world that we’ve used for hundreds of years.

Candlemas was eventually brought to the U.S. during the mid-18th century by the first major immigration of Germanic peoples, as well as those who would soon be referred to as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Called “Dachstag,” or Badger Day, they celebrated the holiday on February 1st with the belief that a badger, not a groundhog, would predict how much longer winter would last. However, the holiday has been celebrated on February 2 with a prediction from a groundhog since as early as 1840.

Why is the groundhog’s name Punxsutawney Phil?

The legendary groundhog’s name comes fromPunxsutawney, the Pennsylvania town that has hostedthe largest Groundhog Day celebration since 1887. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club also claims that he was named after King Philip, although exact details remain vague. “Phil” received his official name in the 1960s, which cemented Punxsutawney Phil as a household celebrity.

What does Phil do on Groundhog Day?

Each year, as many as 30,000 people flock to Punxsutawney’s Gobbler’s Knob to celebrate Groundhog Day with Phil. At dawn on February 2, Phil supposedly reports his predictions to an inner circle of local men dressed in top hats and formal suits and then the celebrations begin.

Punxsutawney’s 2023 Groundhog Day events include everything from talent shows and dueling piano performances to banquets and a holiday ball. In fact, the city has since become so associated with Groundhog Day that it even inspired the 1993 comedy “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

How old is Punxsutawney Phil?

According to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, there has been only one Punxsutawney Phil since he first made his holiday debut in 1887. As the legend goes, his longevity comes from a secret “elixir of life” that he drinks at the city’s annual Groundhog Picnic each summer to give him seven more years of life.

However, according to the Racine Zoo in Racine, Wisconsin, woodchucks (also known as groundhogs) can live between two and six years in the wild, and up to 10 years under human care. So, feel free to formulate your own opinion on Punxsutawney Phil’s actual age.

Are there other groundhogs besides Punxsutawney Phil?

While The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club claims all other “weather forecasting groundhogs” are impostors, many other cities have resident critters with the same capacity to predict weather. Some of these critters have even opposed Punxsutawney Phil over the years. Here are a few other key groundhogs across North America with supposed special weather prognosticating abilities.

Dunkirk Dave

Dunkirk Dave resides in Dunkirk, New York, and is considered to be the world’s second-longest prognosticating groundhog. The animal was named by editors of the city’s newspaper after they visited local wildlife rehabilitator and educator Bob Will, who specializes in caring for small mammals such as groundhogs. Will has used groundhogs to predict spring weather for nearly 60 years and considers every day to be Groundhog Day at his house.

Staten Island Chuck

Another magical groundhog of note is Staten Island Chuck, also located in New York. He lives at the Staten Island Zoo and has served as New York City’s official groundhog meteorologist since the 1980s. Staten Island Chuck has gone viral several times over the years after biting then-mayor Michael Bloomberg at a celebration in 2009 and then being accidentally dropped on the ground by then-mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014, which eventually led to his death several days later.

However, Staten Island Live reported that the groundhog had actually been a stand-in named Charlotte that year and that her death was unrelated to that day’s events. So, there’s a chance that the original Staten Island Chuck is still thriving, especially if he has one of those “elixirs of life” like Punxsutawney Phil.

Potomac Phil

Just a few hours south in Washington, D.C. resides a proud groundhog who not only predicts winter’s end but also how much political gridlock the U.S. is to expect in a given year. Unlike the previously mentioned groundhogs, Potomac Phil has been taxidermied and is the youngest of the bunch, making his debut at the DuPont Circle Groundhog Day celebration in 2012.
