This traditional Waldorf Salad recipe is the perfect sweet addition to summer BBQ’s and parties! Full of apples, grapes and celery, this salad is not to be missed!
One of the grocery stores around me carries Waldorf salad in their deli case. I bought it once, wondering if it would be a hit with Jonathan or not- it seemed to be chock-full of things that he likes, but with the dressing on it, I wasn’t certain. As soon as he saw the grapes, he started doing his “grabby fingers” routine for it, and I figured that I had a hit on my hands.
Of course, as soon as I found something then Jonathan would readily and happily eat anytime it was placed in front of him, it then began making its appearance less and less frequently. When I went to the store and they told me they were discontinuing it, I figured it was time for me to learn to make my own, surmising that it was probably less expensive to make from scratch than it was to pay for it in the deli anyway.
It turned out beautifully, and was loved by all members of the house. I’m supremely glad that I no longer have to worry about forgetting it at the grocery store or them not carrying it anymore- lots of good things come to an end, but luckily this doesn’t have to be one of them.
What’s in a Waldorf Salad?
If you’ve never had Waldorf salad before, it’s a perfect light lunch, side dish, starter or snack. And it’s perfect now that we are heading into warmer weather. It’s full of light and crisp textures and flavors- with grapes, celery, apples, walnuts, dried cranberries, coconut getting mixed together and dressed with a slightly sweet, yet slightly tangy, dressing. I believe usually this dish is made with just mayonnaise, but I wanted to lighten it up by using mayonnaise mixed with plain yogurt, honey, and a little lime juice.
How do you make Waldorf Salad?
It’s really just as simple as cutting up the fruit, nuts and celery, throwing them in a bowl and mixing in the dressing. When you need a quick and easy dish to take to a BBQ, this should be your go to!

I love Waldorf salad, but I never think to make it at home. It’s been YEARS since I’ve had it! You have inspired me and I think I’m going to use your recipe. 🙂
These are the simple ingredients you'll need to make this restaurant-worthy Waldorf salad recipe at home: For the dressing: mayonnaise, white sugar, lemon juice, and salt. For the salad: apples, celery, walnuts, and (optional) raisins.
A Waldorf salad is a fruit and nut salad generally made of celery, fresh apples, walnuts, and grapes, dressed in mayonnaise, and traditionally served on a bed of lettuce as an appetizer or a light meal. The apples, celery, and grapes can all be green, which harmonizes the color palette of the dish.
Classic – This recipe has been around since the late 1800's in New York City at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. There are different variations, but they all contain the typical Waldorf salad ingredients of apples, celery, grapes, and nuts in a mayonnaise based dressing.
Ranch Dressing. The ranch is a salad dressing or dip made with buttermilk, salt, garlic, onions, herbs (dill, parsley, chives, etc.), and spices (mustard seeds, black pepper, paprika, etc.) ...
Walnuts, with their rich, earthy taste, are a perfect choice for salads. They add a robust crunch and are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health.
Roasted beans are a nice replacement for nuts in salads. Spiced and roasted chickpeas are a great “nu*t bowl” snack. Pretzels – Yes, pretzels. KFA member Kathryn shared with us, “I like to use pretzels in place of nuts in recipes, like pie crusts and chicken coatings.
Celery leaves are delicious, nutritious, and packed with intense celery flavor. Prep them like you would any herb: minced, coarsely chopped, or left in their true, whole-leaf form. Toss the tender leaves with salad greens and vinaigrette. Throw them into stir-fries, stocks, soups, and sauces.
The best Ambrosia Salad recipe is made with pineapple, mandarin oranges, yogurt, mini marshmallows, coconut and whipped cream. This easy side dish has a delicious tropical sweetness and is always a crowd favorite!
Buttermilk salad dressing is very similar to a classic ranch dressing, but just pared down a little bit. This simple mix is a blend of rich mayonnaise, tangy buttermilk, punchy garlic, herbs (here, parsley or dill), and usually a little more acid from either lemon juice or a splash of vinegar.
It's a basic recipe made simply with olive oil, lemon juice (or vinegar), garlic, Dijon, salt and pepper that can be whipped up in just 5 minutes. And I'm telling you — this salad dressing somehow magically works with just about any type of salad you might be craving!
In order to be labeled “mayonnaise” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that a product have at least 65% vegetable oil in it by weight. Miracle Whip doesn't meet this qualification, so it is called a “dressing” by the FDA.
