Air Fryer Veggie Fries

You probably want to know what the story is behind these air fryer veggie fries. After all, us Milner’s have been air frying for a decade and you probably want to know when the air fryer veggie fries became our thing!

Well it goes back to 2015 when we first followed the paleo diet and we started off by cooking air fryer carrot fries.

But it soon turned into a night before grocery shopping Milner family tradition.

We would look at what vegetables was in the bottom of the fridge and use them towards a fridge clear out dinner. Ideally, we were looking for root vegetables that could be cooked for dinner together and that would feed the five of us.

Quite often, we would have courgettes (also known as zucchini), carrots, butternut squash or pumpkin and some sweet potato that needed using up.

It didn’t matter if it was just one small courgette, two ugly looking carrots and butternut squash I had forgotten about. Because once sliced into fries, the vegetables together would make quite a collection.

We would then air fry our root vegetables and serve them with whatever meat we were having for dinner. Though, usually when we are having root vegetables an air fryer roast chicken would be close by.

So, if you have ever wondered what us Milner’s eat the most when we are not creating new recipes for you, then there is a big chance it is roast chicken and air fryer veggie fries.

Best Veggie Fries?

There is no right or wrong answer here. There are a lot of different veggies that make delicious veggie fries.

My favourites are any of the following:

  • Air Fryer Rutabaga Fries
  • Air Fryer Butternut Squash Fries
  • Air Fryer Carrot Fries
  • Air Fryer Pumpkin Fries
  • Air Fryer Zucchini Fries
  • Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Note, that all the links above are clickable and take you to an individual recipe with that vegetable. That is because those above are the best veggie fries and you can do any of them in the air fryer.

All the above are also ideal for mixing and matching and cooking together as vegetable fries too.

Ideally, choose from the above with what root vegetables you have in right now.

Zucchini & Carrot Fries

Though what I do make the most is zucchini (aka courgette) and carrot fries. This is because I tend to buy these two vegetables the most.

You can guarantee that at any time you will find zucchini and carrots in the bottom of my fridge. I just love them and paired together they make a fantastic quick side for dinner.

You would think that pairing zucchini which cooks fast and is not a root vegetable, with carrots would be a recipe for disaster.

But the zucchini handles a longer cook time well and the liquid from the wet zucchini makes the carrots more moist.

Air Fryer Veggie Chips

Of course, if you live in the UK you may call them air fryer veggie chips. They mean the exact same thing as air fryer veggie fries, just a different name, depending on which side of the Atlantic you live.

Notes

WW. These vegetable fries are ideal for both Weight Watchers and Slimming World. That is because the only food that is not free is the extra virgin olive oil. Split that between four people and its just 1/3 of a teaspoon per person. Plus some always travels into the bottom of the air fryer.

Swaps. Mix and match whichever vegetables that you have in. I love butternut squash and sweet potatoes the most, but any I have mentioned in this recipe work well.

Crispy. I cooked my veggie fries for an extra 12 minutes to improve on the crisp. If you don’t want them crispy, then you can stop the cook time at 20 minutes.

Thanks for reading our air fryer veggie fries recipe on Recipe This. We have many more air fryer recipes for you to check out next. Though if you love veggies, then I recommend you try our air fryer carrots and potatoes.

FAQs

Why do you soak potatoes in water before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Why don t my fries get crispy in air fryer? ›

Cook the fries at a low heat to start and then turn the air fryer temperature up to give them that crispy texture. Dry your potatoes completely before adding oil. This allows the oil to stick to the potato whereas if it's still wet, it will repel it and they could turn soggy.

Do you season fries before or after air frying? ›

Drizzle the potatoes with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and toss to coat. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer so that the potatoes are not touching each other. You will have to work in batches. Air fry for 12 to 15 minutes*, flipping halfway, or until crispy.

How do you cook greens veggie fries? ›

Fryer Deep fry the frozen vegetable fries for 3-4 minutes in preheated oil at 175°C. Do not fry too many at once to avoid heat loss.

What is the trick to getting things extra crispy with an air fryer? ›

While we wish it were possible to fry without any oil, air fryers do need a little oil to make your food crispy (but you'll use a lot less than a traditional fryer). Toss your food with a small amount of oil (around a tablespoon or less) to coat it evenly, then add it to the air fryer basket.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

Do you put foil in air fryer for fries? ›

Bottom Line

Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer. The one thing to remember is not to cover the heating mechanism or fan with foil or any other material, as this can not only prevent the food from cooking but also damage your air fryer.

How do you crisp fries in an air fryer? ›

Simply set your air fryer to 350 degrees, then place your leftover fries in a single layer in the fryer basket. Heat them for three to five minutes or until they reach your desired crispiness.

Can I use butter instead of oil in an air fryer? ›

Yes, butter can replace oil in an air fryer. Use melted butter, brushing it lightly on the food you're cooking. Butter enhances flavor, making dishes richer and juicier, and helps with heat transfer as the air fryer's fan circulates air. However, butter's lower smoke point means it burns quickly and may produce smoke.

What should I season my fries with? ›

Spices in fries seasoning
  1. Salt – I like using table salt for this seasoning as the grains are finer than cooking salt/kosher salt so it sticks better to the surface of the fries. ...
  2. Onion powder can be substituted with more garlic powder, and vice versa.
  3. Oregano can be substituted with thyme.

How to get salt to stick to air fryer fries? ›

Why do you put vinegar in collard greens? ›

This might seem like an unusual addition if you're new to making collard greens, but the vinegar adds a welcome tangy note that brightens the dish and balances out the salty, savory flavors. A tablespoon of sugar also helps balance out the greens' potential bitterness.

What is the healthiest way to fry vegetables? ›

Stir-fry. Stir-frying is a good option because while the heat is high, it's quick. That sears the vegetables quickly, locking in important nutrients and maintaining their color and texture. Be sure to use small amounts of oil and choose healthier varieties (like olive or vegetable oil).

Are vegetable fries healthy? ›

"Vegetable fries are fattier and more caloric than conventional potato fries,” confirmed nutritionist and dietician Véronique Maindiaux in an interview with RTBF. "This is probably due to the fact that they absorb more oil during the frying process. They are also much saltier than classic fries.

Is it best to soak potatoes in water before frying? ›

Summary: Good news for chips lovers everywhere -- new research in the journal Science of Food and Agriculture shows that pre-soaking potatoes in water before frying can reduce levels of acrylamide.

How long should I soak potatoes before frying? ›

How long to soak potatoes in water for frying? ›

If you're pressed for time, the slightly sticky, cut potatoes should be soaked for a minimum of 15 minutes. However, a longer soak time may allow more starch to be removed. So, if you can prep the fries ahead of time, a few hours of soaking can help make them even crispier.

Why do soaking potatoes make them crispier? ›

These tips are completely doable, actually pretty much fail-proof. SOAK your potato chunks in cold water. This removes some of the starch and helps get them super duper crispy.
